I agree with upstream here that this is wrong.
E.g. it does not handle "🀄 " from Symbola correctly:
(g.xOff: 15, g.width: 17, g.x: 1).
You probably want to use the following config instead:
> URxvt*letterSpace: -1

According to Ram-Z that optionally uses pixbuf if it's available, and doesn't
if it's not.

The patch is taken from

It was posted to the mailing list in 2014q4, where it was rejected, because
"the fonts are bad/wrong", ignoring the usefulness of special glyphs
that are meant to intentionally span multiple cells.
