Tags can easily be removed without altering history. In that sense commits are more reliable than tags and that is why I prefer using commits. Thank you for the advice anyway.

I agree with @malacology that the change to using git tags should be incorporated

better to use source=("git+$url.git#tag=v$pkgver"). You don't need to manually find the commit just use the pkgver tags
