Following is my work-around:
1st do:
wget http://http.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/a/apertium-en-es/apertium-en-es_0.8.0~r57502-2_all.deb
Then:
wget https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/snapshot/deb2targz.tar.gz
and do your makepkg & install deb2targz
Next execute:
deb2targz apertium-en-es_0.8.0\~r57502-2_all.deb
doing pacman -U on the resulting .pkg.tar.xz file will not work so...
do: (shame on you if ya don't have mc)
sudo mc
and open/enter apertium-en-es_0.8.0~r57502-2_all.pkg.tar.xz in say the left panel.
Now navigate down to the apertium-en-es directory and (you guested it) copy that to /usr/share/apertium in the right panel. Now copy the 3 files in modes (from your left panel) to /usr/share/apertium/modes (in the right panel).
Finally remember this trick for the future - packages.debian.org can be a very handy resource!
