I'm aware that this is an old package, but it is easy to get it to compile. Change make to make CFLAGS=-fcommon in the build() function.

Please remove the comma after 'i686' value for the arch array. Otherwise, it can't be built on x86 machines: ==> ERROR: atlc is not available for the 'i686' architecture.

What a coincidence. Wanted to update the package myself :D A few notes though. || return 1 can be removed and $startdir references are deprecated
