matburt, is this on -Syu or -S anything? Can you attempt to install each package that -Syu is attempting to install separately and see if they all fail or just one? If so, please let me know the failing package.

Actually you'd be better off using the .pacnew from the new one (/etc/pacman.conf.pacnew).
