A simple Google search lead to this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=213750

It seems that using replaces in an AUR package is not an optimal practice.

The replaces makes no sense in the AUR. Only makes sense if you put the built packages in a local repository. If someone has authy-snap installed, the only way to replace it is to install manually authy, but first you need to realize that the package was renamed, and if you have realized that it was renamed, at that point you should be smart enough to uninstall authy-snap.

As Allan puts it: replaces is useless for packages outside a repo.

Although I'm generally mystified by maintainers who would prefer orphan requests over making simple updates to their packages, I've had some annoying discussions with maintainers who have indicated that they prefer to receive orphan requests over flags. I took your remark about involving a TU in similar vein.

The rename was three years ago. Anyone who hasn't updated by now should be allowed to keep the old package.

You know I didn't mean an orphan request... Just a simple question

If a new authy-snap were to be created (which is unlikely because the name is bad), the replaces could be removed. replaces is used to upgrade people from the old package name to the new and is valid in this case. We could ask a TU for an opinion on if the replaces should "expire".

Guideline is that replaces is to be avoided. authy-snap is no longer on AUR. If it is revived, it would be a different package from the original, and the replaces would be incorrect.

chaotic-aur is not an official repository and thus not something the aur package maintainers have to worry about. There is also no guarantee that replaces is no longer relevant and there are no guidelines for how long it should exist to my knowledge.

A replaces directive was causing someone problems with another package. So sending the request for packages in chaotic-aur that could potentially have a similar issue someday. Since the historical reason for the directive is likely no longer relevant, it should be removed now.

The replaces directive is set correctly because the package was renamed in the past. Why do you want it removed?

Please remove replaces directive. Thank you.
