Don't be silly, just recompile banshee and it works

The latest taglib-sharp-git update brakes Banshee. (When playing a song an error message will appear, and Banshee will become unresponsive.) I suggest you update this, and the mono-upnp-git package to rely on the community taglib-sharp package instead, as with it Banshee still works. (I tested this by force removing taglib-sharp-git, and then installing taglib-sharp.)

@nicman23 in this version (non-git) banshee plays mp3 files after installing gst ugly plugin

nicman23 commented on 2018-01-07 11:39

also about mp3, sorry i do not use them :/ . Only use flacs and opus

nicman23 commented on 2018-01-07 11:39

@mxfm, i since moved to a fork that i somewhat help with (issues, testing pull requests) and is active.

see banshee-git.

@nicman23 - currently banshee indeed compiles, so it was fixed since October (last time when i tried). However, it cannot play mp3 files, probably it needs gst plugins.

Nevertheless, I still believe it support will be dropped in the future because banshee is not maintained. Take look at source code https://github.com/GNOME/banshee/commits/master?after=01c90930b32aff99a4e310bae04d0a61dee23b55+34. It has only translation updates since 2015. Software development advances and this increases burden of keeping old software up-to-date. The more time passes, the more efforts must be undertaken in making it work. This is especially relevant in archlinux where everything is kept up-to-date. Banshee was dropped from repos in late 2016 (https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/5dz5t5/banshee_dropped_from_repos_alternatives/), so i will not be surprised than in some point in the future even AUR maintaner will give up supporting it.

dudes, what are you talking about? all packages that banshee depends on compile fine on my machine...

please elaborate :/

@kaptoxic @akb825 after digging up this issue, i concluded that it is better to use alternative. The official Arch policy is that AUR packages are not supported, furthermore Arch developers believe that it is better to drop programs which were not developed for several years. I have found several times that arch developer suggest to remove a program from main repos because of no commits in several years (maybe it was about banshee, I don't remember). Due to these reasons it is very unlikely that you will found support for old programs in arch.

There are two alternatives: either you do compilation yourself (possibly including publishing and maintaining new package in AUR) or you will switch to alternative. For me banshee was not principally important, so I used simple gtk alternative - deadbeef.

P.S. The arch policy of pushing you new programs and abandoning old has a negative unintended consequence for former GNOME users. It this case it means that banshee should be abandoned and GNOME Music is used. Unfortunately, i found GNOME music inconvenient for it dependency on tracker. For some strange reasons, it does not allow just to play files (open a file), it can only play music library. But this depends on tracker ability to detect mp3 files on your drive and in my case it failed.

Is there a way to fix the dependent packages, or circumvent the issue, so that this one is built successfully?

akb825 commented on 2017-10-31 08:01

The mono-upnp dependency also cannot be built, since it depends on the gmcs command, which is only provided under the name mcs for the latest version of mono. (it looks like the dependency was also recently moved to AUR and is currently orphaned)
