Out of curiosity, what are people doing with this code? I was a Bash noob when I wrote this and the code is very inefficient (e.g. many subshell invocations could be replaced with Bash string manipulations).
If this really is useful I may improve it. Otherwise I will just let it continue collecting dust.
I ask mostly because it has so many votes.
