0.4 works fine without root out of the box, thank you.

The new udev rules did not trigger automatically after installation, so it might have been required to reconnect the device (or reboot). This is fixed now. Also make sure your user is in the video and input group (and you have logged out and in again). Then it works perfectly fine without root on my machines. If it still does not work you can check with udevadm monitor -s leds -s backlight -p and sudo udevadm trigger -s leds -s backlight -c add -v(in another terminal) if it fires the matching events.

I also need root since 0.3.1-2.

A temporary fix is to run:

sudo chmod u+s /usr/bin/brightnessctl

Doesn't work for me either since 0.3.1-2, unless I run as root. I have added myself to the input and video groups with no success.

Try adding your user to the 'video' group, you are probably already part of the input group.

Just run: gpasswd -a <user> video

for me, it stopped working since release 2, now it requires root privileges for changing the screen brightness. Strangely, changing the keyboard backlight brightness still works.

If we are using udev rules anyway, why not use `MAKE INSTALL_UDEV_RULES=1 install` and get rid of the additional file in the PKGBUILD and also the setuid bit in the binary?
