My MFCJ280w got infested by ants and died. I'm disowning this package since I have no way to test it anymore.

I "took it over" because it was abandoned and didn't get ported to AUR4. I have this printer, and I needed this package, and since it built (and, AFAIK, still builds) without problems, I pushed the unaltered code to AUR4 and have not worked with it.
If you feel you can do a better job, I have no problem with you taking over and doing so. I have too many other things to worry about at the moment.

You took it over, but do you understand what it's actually doing? No, just removing the dep won't work, you need to actually go through and fix the PKGBUILD. Honestly, it's archaic anyway; all of those '|| return 1's haven't been needed in what, 8 years or so?

to be quite honest, I have no idea. I just took over maintenance of this because I needed it and it was abandoned. Does it work without that dependency?

What's the point of deb2targz? makepkg already extracts the .deb file for you, you just have to tar file that was inside it and is already there.
