About what software to use - I have found inkscape to be really good at quick one-off labels

If you have the permissions problem (being unable to print due to default options not being saved), reinstall brother-ql500-lpr.

The service "cups" is now "org.cups.cupsd.service" on my system - I made changes to this packages install script and also cleaned up the PKGBUILD a little - feel free to use what you want of my git diff at http://pastebin.com/vZk5c5zW

My answer is there :
you can use glabels, which works fine with QL-500

If the green light is flashing, a reason may be that the actual size of label in the QL-500 does not match with the size set in the driver. You must go in the driver settings to set the correct size. Before doing that, ensure that there are sufficient rights on the directory :
/usr/share/brother/PTouch/ql500/inf (group=lp, owner=root, rights=rwxrwxr-x)
and on the file :
/usr/share/brother/PTouch/ql500/inf/brql500rc
(group=lp, owner=daemon, rights=rwxrwxr-x)

@ khampf :
you are still the owner of the package, I can't adopt it …!
Did you forget to disown it ?

khampf commented on 2014-05-26 09:21

Disowning this so Zoe can mantain it, the QL-500 finally works. Also remember there's a brother-ql500-cupswrapperinch package that needs some love too :)

As I said in my last comment on brother-ql500-lpr, I made a new PKGBUILD :
http://pastebin.com/DNw3bC5M
and a new cupswrapper.install :
http://pastebin.com/Se9SkfU2

Important, the QL-500 printer must be connected and be put on before installing.

Now it works, thanks to the work made by the maintainer of brother-ql700-lpr
glabels works very well with QL-500 and this driver.

@khampf : if you like, I can become the maintainer of this package.
