I'm very confused, because I'm able to use the https links to download the drivers by hand, but mkpkg says:

Sources don't work anymore. URLs need to be changed to https. Then everything works again.

Extracting the .deb files with bsdtar would be much more efficient than using deb2targz. You would then have the data.tar.* file that was inside the .deb to extract.
