In the interest to keep things simple, I'm not adding any options - but you can always put your own script in ~/.local/bin or /usr/local/bin. I think you'd just need to add a few flags.

Is this a replacement for the package "checkupdates-aur" which no longer exists in the AUR?

You could make this more interesting by (optionally) also checking for VCS upgrades:
