Maybe you should try getting hashes from the packages file or whatever and only leave the hash for a package file.

Tried building in a clean chroot environment with an unmodified PKGBUILD:

$ makepkg -s
Unknown dependency: code-brand

Seems like the handling of _upstream_deps is broken.
