No, it works well without Unity, but some plugins need to be enabled manually in CCSM, at least: composite, opengl, window decoration, move window, place windows, resize window.

No, because unity 6.0 depends on compiz 0.9.8, and I can't update unity to version 7.0, because it depends on unreleased bamf and libunity versions... So I'm currently waiting for bamf 0.4 and libunity 7.0, and then I update all packages at the same time.
