PSA: Do a clean build before commenting that it's not working.

FYI, every time I touch the PKGBUILD be sure that I just spent 30 - 40 minutes building it in a clean chroot.

Expect some loose ends, not yet released. 'Super + A' and 'Super + /' for application library and launcher. one can build with an AUR helper, or with makepkg.

build with AUR helper

this avoids recompiling the rust code again and again. but does not avoid relinking the executables in case one build fails and you trigger again:

CARGO_TARGET_DIR=~/.cache/paru/cargo-target paru
build with makepkg in clean environment

advantage is if you rebuild in case it fails one time, it better remembers stuff already built.

git LFS breaks build

do not enable git lfs. it may lead to failures in cloning. last known occurrence for cosmic-greeter, reported here: https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-greeter/issues/5

@yochananmarqos That's my bad I didn't see the commits, I saw the message about not using helpers.

yochananmarqos commented on 2024-04-01 19:43 (UTC)

@HopperMCS: Right now, you don't. You read my last comment and saw my most recent commit message, right?

@malcolm: Please do not suggest that anyone use the ChaoticAUR repo--especially here since it has nothing to do with this package. There's always something broken and users ask for support in the wrong places and waste helpful volunteers time by not bothering to mention they use an unsupported third-party repo.

HopperMCS commented on 2024-04-01 19:41 (UTC)

@malcolm I didn't realize there was a compiled version, is that not a thing being done anymore I take it? The first time I compiled it awhile ago it was fine, but the past few days are no-gos. Is it an issue on Arch's end or just COSMIC's alpha state?

malcolm commented on 2024-04-01 19:38 (UTC)

the chaotic-aur repository contains a compiled version, but it is relatively old, as recent attempts to compile it again have failed. the intention was to have a new build every month, following the system76 update blogs.

So what's the best way to get COSMIC installed (and not failing at compile time)? So far I've tried makepkg, that fails, yay cosmic-epoch-git - which fails, and building using just sysext, which also fails.

Edit: So yay is an aur helper, had to look at the wiki. Also seems paru is, so the above I'd have to replace paru with yay's directory, but as you said aur helpers are unsupported which is why I tried the other two routes yesterday as well.

yochananmarqos commented on 2024-04-01 19:18 (UTC)

@HopperMCS: Ignore @soluturn's pinned comment. It is incorrect and he is mostly AWOL.

Keep in mind AUR helpers are not officially supported and I do not recommend using one for this package.

HopperMCS commented on 2024-04-01 19:08 (UTC)

@yochananmarqos I can't get r119.408aa60-1 to build at all using yay, furthermore I tried to compile the sysext myself like the main repo has instructions for and it fails similarly. There's something wrong with either settings or store, and make isn't happy about it. I spent a good amount of yesterday toying with it. I'm new to arch but not new to Linux, with some guidance I'm sure I could be of some use, just not sure how much.

yochananmarqos commented on 2024-04-01 19:03 (UTC)

If you already have r119.408aa60-1 installed, don't bother attempting to update yet unless you want to see why r120.f7cd2ac-1 is failing to build and help me out with fixing it. I've been able to fix some other things, however it currently fails building cosmic-edit. I'll continue to fiddle and see if I can fix it.

@skygrango: Ah, I see. Sorry about my poor reading comprehension skills. :D
