Would it be possible to modify the ds9.desktop file in this way so that ds9 can be used to open FITS files? Thanks

DS9 hasn't updated their linux binary folders yet -- will update when those are available. See here:

Thanks! I've added the icon. Please let me know if there are any issues.

Well I think a desktop file without a image seems to be strange...
Here I got an icon for you:
install it in the ${pkgdir}/usr/share/pixmaps and add the "Icon=ds9" line in ds9.desktop may give a good performance.
Also it might be a good idea to add Astronomy and Education in the "Categories" part of ds9.desktop.

Would it be possible to add a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications? I had to create one so ds9 would how up in "select application" dialogs from firefox, nautilus, etc.

7.2 up. Tested on x86_64.

clu commented on 2012-07-10 15:59

7.0.2 up -- tested on x86_64.

* No more /usr/local/bin location.

vinvin commented on 2012-07-10 15:26

Version 7.0.2 is currently available, it works fine on x86_64.
Could you add the provides=('ds9') line to PKGBUILD please? Thanks!

This package adds a shell profile to add /usr/local/bin to PATH so you may have to log out and log back in if /usr/local/bin is not in your PATH variable by default (you could also just update PATH manually).

Tested on i686 and it is working for me.
