Thanks to lilydjwg/lmartinez for keeping this so usefull PKGBUILD alive and healthy.

Just a quick not to say that "fbcat-git", https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/fbcat-git, was abandoned and is now orphan. Maybe you could also adopt it, so that the same person ensures consistency.

The PKGBUILD seems fine. It was actually last updated six years ago, excluding simple version updates by bot.

In the meantime, I,ve asked the developer to make a new release, https://github.com/jwilk/fbcat/issues/19

Yup, I'll make a new release in a few days.
Thanks for poking me.

And he did it! https://github.com/jwilk/fbcat/releases/tag/0.5.2

It might be worth rechecking the current PKGBUILD anyway. Last update was 3 years ago.

EDIT: Please ignore the original post, in the meantime I got this answer from the developer

...This is deliberate. Our fbgrab was designed to be a drop-in replacement for Gunnar Monell’s fbgrab.

ORIGINAL POST:

A question about this PKGBUILD's

conflicts=('fbgrab')

fbcat:

fbgrab:

This means that currently one has to choose. Either install fbcat (jwilk) or the official Arch package fbgrab (gunnar). That's why the "conflicts" tag is there. The result is that one is forced to uninstall one, to try the other. One cant' have both simultaneously on the system.

I'd like to have them both on my system. My question is, couldnt this be avoided by renaming what this PKGBUILD (fbcat) installs ?

After all fbcat (jwilk) says:

fbgrab is a wrapper around fbcat which emulates the behaviour of Gunnar
       Monell's fbgrab utility.

and:

The following options of Gunnar Monell's fbgrab are recognized but not
       supported:

So fbcat (jwilk) just mimics some stuff from fbgrab (gunnar). And he, jwilk, unfortunately choose to name his (jwilk) fbgrab binary the same as fbgrab (gunnar). As I see it, there is "per se" , besides this name conflict, no technical reason not to have both on the system at the same time

Couldnt this PKGBUILD be changed, so that:

  • it installs 2 binaries:

    • one called fbcat
    • another called fbcat-fbgrab
  • it installs 2 manpages:

    • one called man fbcat
    • another called man fbcat-fbgrab

Thanks in advance.

tuckerboniface: thanks. It should be updated in a few hours.

fbcat is no longer hosted on bitbucket. Installation of this package errors with an HTTP 404. Please replace the PKGBUILD with a modified version located here -> https://hastebin.com/nanalefigi Thanks!

Edit: I have made a fbcat-git package if anyone is interested.

Minor update to PKGBUILD.
