I didn't think the executable should be run by itself.

Why is executable installed in /usr/lib?

set message host in /etc/chromium-dev is a custom modification i do in that package (i am the maintainer). send a notification for all plugins for add that path is tedious and maybe refuse by plugin devs, so i think is better do it manually with symlink like you posted

greetings

The path is /etc/chromium-dev/native-messaging-hosts/ right? (From email notifications). Is there any reason why I shouldn't add it?

I guess you could also use a symlink:

# ln -sr /etc/chromium /etc/chromium-dev
