I found a fork that has fixed it and added a few improvements.
The original is at http://www.linusakesson.net/files/freecell-1.0.tar.gz The fork is at https://github.com/ostrosablin/freecell
A friend way back also made a Python version with a competitive mode: https://github.com/PartlyAtomic/drunken-bugfixes

Doesn't build anymore, I needed to add an
