Ah, I found the issue after attempting it with paru, it needs devtools installed. I'd recommend making it a dependency, thank you for the help!

... works on my machine with paru --chroot freenginx-libressl. Can you specify the error? In any case, you can use --nocheck with makepkg. (and probably with paru as well.)

580bef96581e seems to be the last commit that will properly install. I don't entirely know what's going on with all the tests but once the package started using them, some of them fail and the package also fails to build as a result. any commits 50e3032f0b45 and later all face this issue, even with cleanbuilds and on new machines.
