@MarsSeed, please check that you do not have ".hi" or ".o" files compiled with another version of GHC. These likely cause ghc: panic! errors. See my comments on:

@all, I got a deletion request earlier, so I note: I still maintain and use this package to test programs for backwards compatibility and for compiling old Haskell projects. I do not think this package should be deleted.

Does not work:

$ ghc-8.8 helloworld.hs
ghc: panic! (the 'impossible' happened)
  (GHC version 8.8.4 for x86_64-unknown-linux):
        Prelude.chr: bad argument: 2952790017

Please report this as a GHC bug:  https://www.haskell.org/ghc/reportabug

But nothing needs this EOL version from 4 years ago (2020).
