Note that this no longer works for gedit since it started using libgedit-gtksourceview for the syntax highlighting. The *.lang files for gedit should be placed instead in share/libgedit-gtksourceview-300/ (see https://gedit-technology.github.io/developer-docs/libgedit-gtksourceview-300/lang-reference.html).
