Might be that the problem was due to using a tiling window manager (xmonad). this does the trick:
export _JAVA_AWT_WM_NONREPARENTING=1

Danke.
The problem was that I had installed jre8-openjdk & jre8-openjdk-headless, and changed the default Java runtime via "archlinux-java set java-8-openjdk/jre". Setting this back to jre7 did the job.

If it only shows a blank window it could help to just resize the window. If this doesn't work I can only give you these possible solutions:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Awesome#Fix_Java_.28GUI_appears_gray_only.29
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Awesome#Grey_Java_GUIs
I also noticed after an update of java that the files "/etc/profile.d/jre.[c]sh" were replaced with newer versions from the new package "java-common" and the lines with "_JAVA_AWT_WM_NONREPARENTING=1" were commented out again.
That may be my only explanation for this.

Quick question:
This worked on my system until fairly recently (about 1 week ago). Now, it only shows blank windows and I have to CTRL+C my way out of it. I don’t recall changing anything on my system except regular updates. Is there an obvious explanation for this?
Thanks
