same issue as @vfbsilva here, using --no-sandbox or --disable-seccomp-filter-sandbox seems to prevent it (nvidia GPU, Xorg)

$> /usr/local/mendeley-reference-manager/mendeley-reference-manager --no-sandbox

It breaks on launch here: mendeley-reference-manager (electron) The default value of app.allowRendererProcessReuse is deprecated, it is currently "false". It will change to be "true" in Electron 9.
