This little gem was exactly the lightweight commandline player (commandline, rather than with a text interface) I was looking for, and is the only program I've found with sane fast-forwarding abilities. Unfortunately, I don't know C, and this software is without documentation, so the manpage I wrote mentions that 'j' fast-forwards by a "specified amount", but I haven't figured out what the amount exactly is. If someone knows C, I would appreciate it if you can interpret the pertinent part of the minmad.c for me, so I can update the manpage. Thanks!
