@teeahr1 what error message do you get when running as a normal user?

Have you tried running strace on it?

I can only launch the game as root. Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks, just filed the issue to the github. (I wasn't sure that X11 version is in the same repository, so didn't do that before.)

Have you tried filing a bug on their github? Additionally, if you can find an older release which doesn't have this bug, you can try using git bisect to find the offending commit.

Why sometimes h,j,k,l keys do not work? The keys just scroll the messages in the top pane. For example, when pressing ? key for help, then h, nothing happens; pressing ? then k scroll up the messages; but pressing ? key then a works.

Here's a WORK IN PROGRESS nethack-x11.patch and PKGBUILD that builds nethack 3.6.1 for X11, but without tiles, and it only runs as root, and then only the second time you run it. It's pretty horrible.

PKGBUILD: http://ix.io/1dMA nethack-x11.patch: http://ix.io/1dMz nethack.install: http://ix.io/1dMB

Since I found viable forks of NetHack, I'm disowning this package.

Don't be eaten by a grue.

I'm trying to make nethack-x11 be possible to install alongside regular nethack, without conflicting with nethack, while also upgrading to version 3.6.1

However, configuring and compiling nethack is a game on its own.

Here's what I've got so far. Currently it fails when starting nethack-x11: http://ix.io/19My

Users/groups should also probably be added using the systemd mechanism of having an .install file with:

echo '<sysusers.d content="">' | install -Dm644 /dev/stdin "$pkgdir"/usr/lib/sysusers.d/$pkgname.conf</sysusers.d>

And then using the correct content for '<sysusers.d content="">'.</sysusers.d>

I also think it would be nice to get rid of the .patch file, since it's very sensitive for changes in the nethack source code from release to release.

Just being able to install and run nethack-x11 3.6.1, in any form, would be nice.

If someone would like to give it a go, contributions are warmly welcome!

@joemaro, dawnhack looks nice! Perhaps a separate AUR package for nethack-x11 + dawnhack could be a good solution?
