make sure you install the perl-linux-desktopfiles from the aur first. Pacman can't automatically find them as dependencies anymore.

Changed the "source" variable to an array. Should work now. Thanks for report.

Any help with this?

As long as the menu.xml file is understood by Openbox, obmenu-generator doesn't really care about other tools. In this particular example, I think it's an issue of obmenu not understanding the official XML tag.

rcct commented on 2015-08-11 00:51

Is the resulting menu.xml file supposed to be compatible with f.e. obmenu?
If so, at least in my case, it does not seem to be.
I use obmenu-generator to generate a static menu (in order to add personalized sections with obmenu) and as a result the following happens:

- due to the default -c option the following notification is added at the very end (outside of the <openbox_menu> markers that is) of the menu.xml file:

Obt-Message: Xinerama extension is not present on the server

This leads to obmenu crashing. I honestly do not know the reason for this as checking out older files the same default option is there but, as far as I can tell, just recently (roughly latest two versions) has this effect.
The notification is not added when executing obmenu-generator -s and openbox --reconfigure independently one after another and therefore the file can be opened in obmenu.

- when the menu.xml file is generated the following code is added to the execute marker (example Thunar menu entry),

<action name="Execute"><execute>thunar</execute></action>

As far as I understand it, even though at first I thought my configured editor was corrupting the file, the [CDATA[ is meant to be there though as a side effect all execute entries will appear blank in obmenu.
Once removed all shows up as expected.

The Ob menu as such is generated correctly/functional though, as stated at the beginning, it is the obmenu compatibility (or similar gui menu editors if there are) is what I and I presume other users that do not code in xml am concerned about.

Module::Build has been removed from the core of Perl with the new version 5.22, so "perl-module-build" needs to be installed instead.

I updated the "perl-linux-desktopfiles" package to reflect this. Thanks!

ragglefraggle commented on 2015-07-01 20:19

I don't know if something in Perl's changed, but I can't get this installed because of an error involving the perl-linux-desktopfiles dependency; it fails to compile at this step:

Can't locate Module/ in @INC (you may need to install the Module::Build module) (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/share/perl5/site_perl /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/lib/perl5/core_perl /usr/share/perl5/core_perl .) at Build.PL line 7.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at Build.PL line 7.

It's a very recent change, too, since I had this working not even a week ago when I tried it.

Please update PKGBUILD with 'perl-linux-desktopfiles>=0.09'

I agree with many of the other feedback/comments here, that it's
"So good it should be in OB by default! ", or, atleast arch-upstream should consider having obmenu-generator in its cores repos, extra, community...?
Thanks very much for this, trizen.

thanks again, i only just noticed that there have been updates.
this script is just getting better and better!

critique, both pos and neg:
- i am so happy that your script backed up my original menu.xml when i forgot to use the -o switch!
- i wish it would have done the same to my config/ when updating.
- Linux::DesktopFiles has its own man page - some more documentation on obmenu-generator's interaction with it would be good. tricky syntax, and some vars are not explained.
- the -R switch would be great if it could be used in the same command line with actual menu generation.

ps: tried posting anonymously to your blog but did not succeed.

@grimi - added.

Hi trizen. Maybe this is not good place for feature request, but ...
For me this great script, lacks one feature: pipe menu item.
Something like that {pipe => ["pipe script", "name", "icon"]}.
I know that this can be bypass with {raw => [...]}, but with this solution,
every change icon theme, needs reedit, to get common look menu icons.
Please add this feature in future release. Thanks.
Best regards.

@mladoux - fixed.

mladoux commented on 2013-06-14 04:37

I get an error, but only when I try to load hexchat. The error is as follows -->

Text ended before matching quote was found for".(the text was 'sh -c "hexchat --existing--url')

Anyway, there doesn't need to be any parameters passed to that. I checked to see if it was a problem with the program by running the program name through gmrun, and it loaded fine. I'm assuming it's an issue with the pipe menu. Other than that issue, this is by far the best pipe menu I've used for Openbox, keep up the good work!

trizen commented on 2013-03-23 23:39

Thanks CarlD. I'm glad you like it. :)

This is by far the very best pipe menu I have used yet. Looks great, works great, and has a very nice config file to use. So good it should be in OB by default!

trizen commented on 2012-04-02 11:06

My pleasure! ;)

OK, thanks. Will try to figure the new conf out. Great script, BTW. Thanks for it.

trizen commented on 2012-04-01 14:51

@stryder - If you didn't updated for a while, you should know that we switched to a new configuration file, so the 'raw' options from the old config file has to be manually ported to the new one (sorry about that).
See: ~/.config/obmenu-generator/

Anonymous comment on 2012-04-01 09:24

Have been using obmenu-generator without problems for quite a long time. Updated recently and the "raw" commands (like for shutdown and reboot) no longer show. Anything I need to do?

trizen commented on 2012-02-11 22:05

* Added support for icons

Configure Autostarted Applications opens "" but it should be just "autostart".

trizen commented on 2011-08-16 11:27

No, I don't have something like that. This is just a small script and is not intended to copy 100% the 'obmenugen' application. By adding more options might increase the execution time and I don't want that to happen. Sorry.

hasufell commented on 2011-08-16 11:06

do you have something like a bugtracker or feature request?

NoDisplay=true is not recognized and
cant define if exclusions for KDE/XFCE/GNOME are recognized

I installed pcmanfm-mod and got all the user-commands in "Others"

hasufell commented on 2011-08-15 17:36

one last thing. lxde's "openbox-lxde" redirects the openbox-config to lxde-rc.xml. so, one would have to change the behavior of lxsession in /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/desktop.conf or manually edit this script.

you should include an option to change the behavior for "exit" in obmenu-generator.conf. I changed it myself, but its your script.

trizen commented on 2011-03-25 19:15

Yup. '&' should be replaced with '&'. Fixed in v0.2
Thank you!

I have little problem:
Openbox-Message: Nieprawidłowe wyjście z pipe-menu "/usr/bin/obmenu-generator"
Entity: line 23: parser error : xmlParseEntityRef: no name

<action name="Execute"

If I remove /usr/share/applications/jconsole.desktop (openjdk6 package), all works fine.
