I was able to find a version that compiles online. Uploaded it to SourceForge and modified the PKGFILE to use it. Now working fine for those of us who still wants to use it. I'll maintain it since kyak (original submitter) decided to switch to obmenu-generator and disowned this package for good (see comments below).

words of the author about the project

openbox-menu project is abandoned by its author. He moved to github from bitbucket, but didn't move releases/tags. So this package won't build anymore.

I've switched over to obmenu-generator and disowning this package for good.

@kyak Thank you for your advice.

Since the whole project is 3 years after last update, I just tried to fix it by myself. Now I've commented the issue and show my workaround. I'll mail the author later if no reply in bitbucket.

@RedSky Thanks for your effort in patching this problem you are facing.

You should send the patch (or pull request) to upstream authors. This way, everyone will benefit from this change, and not just Arch Linux AUR users. Also, it will enable feedback and review from original author and more eyes. Moreover, Arch approach is to provide as much vanilla packages as possible and only patch when it is absolutely necessary.

Thus said, the patch should be forced upstream and not applied ad-hoc to this package.

Here is the issue:

I just happened to occur the same issue, and the patch is made by myself since the case concerned by the original code almost disappeared right now and icon name without file extension is by default.

Please provide a reference to upstream bug report and patch.

please add this patch to fix icon search for applications with dot in their names (such as org.gnome.Calculator.desktop org.fontforge.FontForge.desktop in /usr/share/applications)

you have to install one of the *-menu packages

seems to either return error 'Can't get menu root directory' with openbox-menu or error 'File /etc/xdg/menus/ doesn't exist. Can't create menu.' openbox-menu /etc/xdg/menus/ ----- Looks like upstream is no longer but
