I think I read somewhere that packages from git are preferred, but I'll add a package using the Github releases then.

Why are you using git instead of getting the tar.gz here[1]? Moreover, you can also find the sha256 there :)
Using git is a bit of a problem for some aur helpers (eg trizen), because one always get "update available" (otpclient-git: v1.0.6.r2.fa85f5c-1 ==> 1.0.6-1) even though there is not update.
