It works with vte3, in fact pantheon-terminal in [community] is already built against vte3.

Depends on package vte290, which no longer exists. It builds against vte or vte3, but so far no luck making it run.

You can't use trunk because it doesn't work with our vte3 package. However since there is no sign of that branch ever being merged, I switched back to using vte290 instead...
