My suggestion: try "spacefm-git" instead.

Except for possible bugfixes, v1.2.4 is the last planned release of PCManFM-Mod. All further development will take place within the SpaceFM project: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=55777

@pablokal: I have added an AUR package 'pcmanfm-mod-nohal' which builds without hal support and dependencies. With that package, you don't need hal installed or running, but pcmanfm-mod's built-in volume management support will be disabled (you won't be able to mount and unmount volumes within pcmanfm-mod, and volumes will not appear in the location side pane).

Hi Ig, Could you drop the dependency of hal?
It is optional you write on your blog.
Pcmanfm-mod is candidate for being included in a new release of archbang and no hal requirement is important.

No, there is no network browsing (unless you mount the share, of course)

Does mod version support smb?

@IgnorantGuru: Then this logic does not work correctly. If it would be reproducible and valid i wouldn’t comment if this were a bug, but sometimes it copies and sometimes it moves to the same location, therefore it looks like a bug to me. There should be a default action for drag and drop independently from drag and drop location.

@dsohler: Generally if you drag across devices it will copy rather than move. You can force move or copy by holding down the shift or ctrl key while releasing the mouse (or ctrl+shift for link creation).

If I drag and drop files into another directory it sometimes copies the files and sometimes moves the files. Is there some logic I don’t get, or is it just a bug? Oh, btw: thanks for adding the .hidden feature!

What about implementing a feature like GNOME’s Natutilus has: Creating a file .hidden containing file names or folder names that will be hidden in PCManFM-Mod window.

I don't use Gnome but you might gain some ideas here... http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=692238
Or ask/search on the Arch forums.

How to make pcmanfm as the default file manager for GNOME (I hate nautilus).

pcmanfm-mod is based on 0.5.2, not the new pcmanfm2/libfm. HAL is required for mounting, but it should otherwise work without it (or can be built with the HAL options turned off). As for pcmanfm2 and udisks, I review pcmanfm2 occasionally and may migrate to that at some point. I plan to leave pcmanfm-mod as an updated legacy version (0.5.2), so if I do anything with pcmanfm2 it will be a different project.

@IgnorantGuru: Thanks for the new PKGBUILD. Are the changes in pcmamfm-mod part of the new pcmanfm2? There seems to be some nice work going on in pcmanfm2/libfm regarding udisks etc. Will pcmanfm-mod work without hal?

LXDE Users:
The AUR pcmanfm-mod-prov package is recommended (it creates a link for pcmanfm during installation, which is used by LXDE for desktop management). Alternatively, you can create the link yourself:
sudo ln -s /usr/bin/pcmanfm-mod /usr/bin/pcmanfm

Comment by IgnorantGuru

Here is the way it is now handled:
The AUR pcmanfm-mod package does not provide pcmanfm and can thus be
installed concurrently with other versions of pcmanfm
The AUR pcmanfm-mod-prov package is identical to pcmanfm-mod except that it
provides pcmanfm and thus conflicts with other versions of pcmanfm

If you have other packages that require pcmanfm and want to use pcmanfm-mod instead, then install AUR pcmanfm-mod-prov. If you want to run pcmanfm-mod in addition to another version of pcmanfm, then install AUR pcmanfm-mod.

@skodabenz: Apparently the provides= line caused that, as well as the link to pcmanfm that the install file created - I didn't think provides would create a conflict. I have changed the PKGBUILD and install file so that it now will not conflict. However, this means pcmanfm-mod no longer provides pcmanfm. If you want it to do so, uncomment the lines indicated in PKGBUILD and pcmanfm-mod.install before building.

To resolve your conflict, you may need to uninstall pcmanfm-mod, then reinstall with the new pcmanfm-mod PKGBUILD 1.1.0-2

Thanks for letting me know.

This package conflicts with pcmanfm-git (using libfm-git) I have installed. I want to install along with pcmamfm-git, how?

Comment by IgnorantGuru

2010-08-09 19:12

Please note that as of v1.1.0, this AUR package will install as /usr/bin/pcmanfm-mod, creating a link named "/usr/bin/pcmanfm" if that file doesn't exist. pcmanfm-mod now installs and runs independently of other versions of pcmanfm, and uses a separate user config folder ~/.config/pcmanfm-mod/

> Couldn't install it without previously installing gettext

AUR packages generally assume you have base and base-devel installed (gettext is part of base). But I have added gettext to the PKGBUILD. Feel free to let me know of any other build dependencies anyone encounters - won't hurt to add them and saves others a hassle. Thanks.

Upstream pcmanfm 0.5 is no longer being maintained so it's not likely to change, which makes it easier to fork from. There is a new upstream version in the works but it's a rewrite rather than a continuation of 0.5.2.

thanks IgnorantGuru.Hope you can keep this irrespective of upstream change to keep it simple or you can rename it.

Thanks.

Dear PCManFM developers: This is how a bug should get fixed (and not shifting it to others)

> Why fam and startup-notification?

On second thought, I'm going to leave startup-notification as a dependency. I'm not sure what that is used for - removing it may break some functions even if it appears to work without it in general. If you can give me more info on why you believe it's not required then I'll consider removing it. Otherwise you can edit the PKGBUILD yourself or use blackpac to remove the dependency...

> Why fam and startup-notification? This packagesa aren’t necessary for PCManFM to work.

I copied those deps from the pcmanfm pkg in extra, which will have identical deps. fam or gamin is required by pcmanfm for directory change detection. gamin provides fam, so if you have gamin installed, fam won't be. I'm not sure about startup-notification but I have made it optional for now.

That is included for use by the installmod script, which installs it as pcmanfm-mod. Not needed by the AUR installation. Just to help people find it in all install scenarios.

> If I don't need all 5 user commands, can they be removed from the context menu?

Not without editing the source.

> What is "open terminal" key binding? If it's removed can you add it back in.

F4 was changed to the first user command. Only keyboard access to Open Terminal is currently Alt-t, t. Or you can add in a keyboard binding in the source. I may consider adding another.

Thanks for many useful features in this mod, especially "paste as link"....I've been asking for this for a long time. A few questions though. There is no pcmanfm-mod executable in my installation, is the pcmanfm-mod.desktop included by mistake? If I don't need all 5 user commands, can they be removed from the context menu? What is "open terminal" key binding? If it's removed can you add it back in.
Thanks.
