For anyone struggling to get themes to work during boot--this is the fix alluded to by Aetf:

@nullptr_t please integrate

For anyone else with the "a start job is running to Hold until boot process finishes up" issue, masking the plymouth-quit-wait service worked for me:

systemctl mask plymouth-quit-wait.service

It appears that this still has the "nice" transition between the plymouth startup screen and GDM (i.e., no black screen flicker), though I noticed that now, on restart/shutdown, the plymouth graphic is no longer displayed. I can deal with that though, I just wanted the screen to not switch back to the console on bootup.

I am having an issue with plymouth which displays splash screen however causes boot to hang (using Grub2 and auto-login to tty1 -
without DM/WM) on VirtualBox. sd-plymouth hook is being used and delay is set to 1. However if I press ESC during splash screen (and get textual output) it boots normally to tty1.

Also another thing is that if I set delay to 0 I get past splash screen but the theme is some gray background with white squares. (attached screenshot)

Any advice on this is appreciated.
Thank you.

@carmelo12341 Thanks for the reference. I included that sd-plymouth.initcpio_install hook in the 0.9.2-13 release

What kind of hook do you mean? Plymouth is added to the initrd, systemd services for the display managers are included. Do you mean something like the plymouth-start.service?

nullptr_t please add systemd hook

I agree with TingPing. If you want pkgconf for building your packages, you can manually install it until it joins base-devel. plymouth builds fine with pkg-config, so there is no need to add pkgconf to any package providing .pc files.

pkgconf provides pkg-config so thats what you would depend upon. Even then deprecated is a strong word and it would be very silly for literally every AUR package to add a dep to pkg-config.
