There is a work-in-progress branch called remove-py2-compat that has some commits from March 2021, aiming at improving Python 3 compatibility and removing Python 2 support.
I suggest you switch over to that one.
It seems the Libervia open-source chat client (libervia-backend-hg) uses the Python 3 version of this experimental Jabber/XMPP extension of Python Twisted.
