I maintain the git package. I don't mean that you need to follow a rolling release from git. Debian maintains release tags you can target so you can build from source code instead of just untarring the archive. It also allows you to tag automatically with the pkgver function in PKGBUILD.

It's not about git vs tarball.

The question is release / vs on-commit packaging.

I think these are two diferent things and fit two differents user needs.

However, i'll create a git package very soon if you need it.

If you want an update to date version that tracks git, see: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/reprepro-git. I don't know why many packages opt for the tarball when Debian does host git repositories. You can view them here:
