The Savage2 installer files are missing from the official s2games.com server.

You'll need to manually download the appropriate .run file from one of the "Off Site HTTP Downloads" mirrors manually before attempting to build this package:

There are a few sites with 2.1.0.8, but you will need to download manually:

* http://www.atomicgamer.com/files/100476/savage-2-client-v2-1-0-8-linux-64-free-to-play

* http://www.moddb.com/games/savage-2-a-tortured-soul/downloads/savage-2-a-tortured-soul-v2108-linux-64-bit

http://www.playsavage2.com/ is supposed to be an active community site, but it lists 2.1.0.1 as the version you should download.

Finally, http://na1.cedeqien.com/ provides an unofficial 2.1.1.0 patch/expansion. I am not involved with the Savage 2 community at all, so I'm not sure what is considered the de-facto version of Savage 2 (or maybe there isn't one because the game is dead?).

Slash commented on 2014-12-14 22:30

Strange, 2.1.0.8 appears to have disappeared off their servers and only 2.1.0.7 is available. Does anyone know what's going on?

savage 2.1.0.8 is out

Slash commented on 2012-08-22 22:41

I updated the LD_LIBRARY_PATH in savage2.sh. savage2.sh used to be part of the installer files, but it appears to be missing from 2.1.0.7. I didn't have time to delve to deeply into it, so I copied the format of "modelviewer.sh" and "dedicated_server.sh".

Fandekasp commented on 2012-08-20 09:46

Btw Slash (thinking about it as I saw the upgrade today), there is something wrong with your sh script.

Please modify l.21 of savage2.sh to:
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$(pwd):$(pwd)/libs:$(pwd)/game:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH"

I had a big headache figuring out why I couldn't run savage2 with bumblebee and optirun because of that line (OpenGL versions are differents depending on the graphic card driver).
Thanks !

I'm running 64-bit Arch with Gallium Radeon drivers and I get an (popular) error - "Savage2 - Fatal Error: OpenGL 2.0 not available.".
It is fixed by renaming /opt/savage2/libs/libstdc++.so.6 to something else, so the system library is used.

http://kdekorte.blogspot.com/2011/08/savage2-and-heros-of-newerth-on-fedora.html

May consider putting the workaround in the PKGBUILD.

taimon commented on 2012-03-16 20:17

I think some of the libs in /opt/savage2/libs should be removed, because they take preference over the system libs.
I needed to mv -t ../libs.bak libfreetype.so.6 libstdc++.so.6 libgcc_s.so.1 libspeex* libcurl.so.4, otherwise I only got a fatal error. I'm not sure if all are necessary.

Thanks for packaging!

@Heretik: Try building and installing the PKGBUILD without yaourt.

@branec: This issue should be fixed now, but you may get the same error as Heretik if you use yaourt to install. "PKGEXT='.pkg.tar'" disables compression on the built package, and it looks like yaourt does not like that.

Anonymous comment on 2011-12-29 12:56

Yes - imchairmanm is right - sorry that I forgot to inform you guys here. We can now take care of many problems ourselves and the update loop problem has been fixed. So everyone installing Savage2 should just install it and not alter the files as suggested - everything is fine now and new installers are incoming very soon.

Anonymous comment on 2011-12-18 21:26

I don't understand. The community just recently got access to the patch server, so the automatic updates actually are working. For the first time in years. You might have to adjust permissions of the game directory, but the updates certainly work.

Slash commented on 2011-12-06 00:52

I updated the install script to tell the user to disable automatic updates since they do not work.

can anyone help me?

Anonymous comment on 2011-02-09 14:59

it seems there's a workaround for the infinite update problem,
edit ~/.savage2/game/startup.cfg
change:
SetSave upd_checkForUpdates "false"

Anonymous comment on 2011-02-09 12:55

Hi, if I run savage2 as regular user, everytime I want to login the game says "Unable to write to game".

If I run "sudo savage2", the game would check and download the update -> "your version 2.1.0.1, new version 2.1.0.2"
but after the download finished, the game would just restart, check and download the same update, as if the update wasn't applied.

I am uploading to my own Server at the moment:
http://188.40.92.72/Savage2Install-2.1.0.1-i686.bin (already uploaded)
and
http://188.40.92.72/Savage2Install-2.1.0.1-x86_64.bin (yet to be uploaded)
Can the maintainer of this PKGBUILD include these locations to the download? (Not sure how many traffic this will be but i will do my best to provide this mirror for longer.

I'm not sure. It must be doing it's own check as to whether or not it's writable. If I run it at root, it works. Maybe it just looks at the directory owner?

I updated the PKGBUILD so it doesn't fail at unzip. You must download version 2.1.0.1 manually from one of the following mirrors and place it in the same directory as the PKGBUILD contents before running "makepkg" (if anyone finds a direct mirror, I'll update the PKGBUILD so this isn't necessary):

The issue DerShcraa's PKGBUILD was that it was using 2.1.0, not 2.1.0.1. And apparently there is a version 2.1.0.2 as well (per @Net-burst's comment). But I can't find any reference to that anywhere. Try downloading 2.1.0.1 from one of these links:

32bit: http://www.filefront.com/14105913/Savage2Install-2.1.0.1-i686.bin/
64bit: http://www.filefront.com/14092843/Savage2Install-2.1.0.1-x86_64.bin/
