I also created the AUR scangearmp2-sane-git which uses the github repository below. It includes a slightly upgraded GUI for scangearmp2, but more importantly provides a sane driver.

After omitting .png in scangearmp2.desktop, please also reflect it's new sha256sum 68f2113ba18aae5f41a4f6febf5574fef7e88921d6768d1763db6f84f3fecc29 in PKGBUILD. 4.80-1 results in Validating […] FAILED.

Could you please drop the .png extension from .desktop file?

Icon=scanner.png

Desktop file '/usr/share/applications/scangearmp2.desktop' should not include extension in Icon key: 'scanner.png'

@Mysti Updated to a later version, and added a workaround. I would still advice to use the scangearmp2-sane-git package as it is better maintained.

@Mysti I have tried updating to 4.71-1, but that doesn't seem to solve the issue. Have you tried the scangearmp2-sane-git instead?
