There seems to be some issue with the kur language (and maybe others - I didn't test further):

So, if anybody else comes here trying to figure this out: tesseract-data-jpn doesn't include data for vertical Japanese. You must create a separate jpn_vert package. Change the _langs variable in the PKGBUILD to this:

_langs=(jpn jpn_vert)

Same goes for Chinese, chi_sim and chi_tra are separate from chi_sim_vert and chi_tra_vert.
