The one font you got is the one that can be downloaded. The rest of the fonts must be supplied by you. Copy scripts are available to help get the fonts from a running Windows or through a network. You can also get the fonts from a CD.

Hi all,
I'm having two obstacles getting around.
1st. is this: Unable to find 81 font(s)
I set the _opt_SkipMissing to 1 and/or 2 and came to
2nd. which is: .../PKGBUILD: line 1355: _extracted_ttfs[0]: unbound variable
After some search found this:
- _fontsout+=("${_extracted_ttfs[@]}")
+ _fontsout+=(${_extracted_ttfs[@]+"${_extracted_ttfs[@]}"})
and finally managed to build this pkg but... with only 1 font inside.
A little help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Andale downloads fine for me. Likely a temporary problem with SourceForge.

You copied them as root. Use chown to change them to your user name. For me the command looks like this. Adapt as necessary.

chown -R chris:users ttf-win7-fonts/

I could fix the PKGBUILD but it's not desirable to have random files owned by root in your user folder.

I receive the following error:

...
==> Starting build()...
chmod: changing permissions of 'arialbd.ttf': Operation not permitted
/usr/bin/makepkg: line 729: logpipe: unbound variable

The files are all set to 777. Here's a partial ls -la output:
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 750216 May 19 2014 arialbd.ttf
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 562728 May 19 2014 arialbi.ttf

-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 119876 Jun 10 2009 ariblk.ttf

Any ideas what's wrong?

The only difference I can see is Palatino to Georgia and Courier. Perhaps someone who knows more about font configurations could comment on which of the other differences are preferred.

Example: <dir>/usr/local/winfonts</dir>
Probably not a useful line in Arch Linux.

doskoi commented on 2016-03-03 18:19

Would it not be better to replace the 20-ttf-win7-fonts-latin.conf file by an (optional?) dependency to fontconfig-ttf-ms-fonts?

It doesn't find any fonts located in the same directory as the PKGBUILD file if the makepkg BUILDDIR variable is set (e.g., BUILDDIR=/tmp/makepkg).

The fonts can't be downloaded automatically. Please obtain them from one of the sources listed in the PKGBUILD. If you have a running Windows 7 you can use the supplied copy scripts to extract out the exact fonts you need.

My font PKGBUILD are all designed to work together. Edit the ttf-office-2007-fonts PKGBUILD for instructions to disable the Windows fonts. That will allow it to install with all the big Windows fonts packages so you can operate with a complete set of fonts. Refresh your PKGBUILD if you don't see the instructions at the top.

This PKGBUILD also provides all the international fonts. Edit the PKGBUILD for instructions to enable these fonts and for other options.

Rhinoceros commented on 2015-08-16 05:05

This installed perfectly, but I had a few comments on the notes in the PKGBUILD.

1) My Windows system (updated in the last few months) had a newer version of Arial (5.20, from 2014) than the SP1 installer (5.06, from 2010). You might want to recommend users check their versions.
2) If checksums fail, rather than manually generating and copying them, it's much easier to simply use `makepkg` with `--skipchecksums`.

The two Calibri Light fonts are part of Windows 7. They are not on the Windows 7 DVD but installed later by Windows Update. They are found in any updated Windows 7.

The Windows 8 DVD includes both fonts.

About the 'missing' calibri fonts, I have a Win7x86_64Pro (autodesk) with SP1 (last updated ~3 months ago) and all PKGBUILD fonts are present (no Office, no powerpoint).
You can easily modify your version of this PKGBUILD to suit your needs better.

@Asparaggi: you're right. The default Windows 7 install and SP1 don't have the calibril.ttf and calibrili.ttf files. I have a bare Windows 7 install and I followed the steps from the PKGBUILD for the SP1 fonts. The two mentioned are not found anywhere and no wonder, as those fonts are a part of the Office package and not Windows 7.

As stated here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2761217/en-us
"The Calibri Light font is the default font for Latin and Cyrillic text in Microsoft PowerPoint 2013, and headings in Word 2013 and other Office 2013 documents. When you view text created with these fonts before you install this update, the text is not displayed as expected."

Not everyone uses Office, so I see two choices here:
1. Update the instructions in PKGBUILD to include the Calibri Light download.
2. Remove those two fonts from the package as they're not a part of Windows 7.

yatesco commented on 2014-08-29 14:07

The instructions in the PKGBUILD file didn't work for me for two reasons:
- cabextract isn't installed by default or listed as a dependency
- once cabextract is installed "$ cabextract -F *.tt[fc] -d win7_sp1 windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe" fails as *.tt[fc] doesn't seem to match anything

Copying the files from Windows/Fonts/* into the same directory as the PKGBUILD works fine.

Is it possible to include __all__ Windows 7 fonts in this package? This package only includes latin fonts, but it would be good if it copied every Win7 font, including for example Arabic, CJK, Tibetan, Sinhala, Hebrew, Myanmar etc. Then, Arch would have clean fonts for every script in Unicode with only one package.

The list of supplied fonts in Windows can be seen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Microsoft_Windows_fonts

I have also extracted these fonts for myself and know all the file names. Or can there be an additional package ttf-win7-fonts-all which includes everything?

I was able to compile it by removing these two entries from PKGBUILD but I wonder why my iso doesn't have these fonts.

In the archive shared by lugubrious (thanks!) the files cour.ttf courbd.ttf courbi.ttf are missing. I solved with a small hack, I linked the 3 missing packages to cour.ttf
regenerated the hashes (makepkg -g) and updated the PKGBUILD file.

If somebody has the missing fonts and could upload them somewhere it would be great!

rprego commented on 2014-01-05 04:57

evilgnome, you need to download the fonts linked to by lugubrious below and extract those into the ttf-win7-fonts directory (the same directory that is created when you extract the tarball)

Lucida Console is a useful monospace font from MS included in all Windows version, it is called lucon.ttf is not particularly beautiful but it is very nice to have an xterm that looks like a cmd prompt :-)
Please include it.

mschmoelzer commented on 2013-10-08 11:24

The SP1 archive never had all of the listed fonts, just the 6 fonts listed in the PKGBUILD comment header. There's probably some ambiguous wording there, will fix with the next functional update.

For best results, users should copy the fonts from a fully updated Windows 7 install. If one wants to extract the fonts from the Windows 7 install media, these six fonts can be extracted from the SP1 update exe.

lugubrious commented on 2013-10-08 09:13

I've uploaded the needed files, a bit of a hack for now but it worked for me. Just extract it to the source folder of the pkgbuild and it should work - no need to download the big sp1 pack. Any trouble with these fonts or the upload just let me know. I don't know how to actually fix the pkgbuild though.

If they are already there (and the package is already installed and just updating), copy all the fonts from there and build the package. For updating users this is a PITA, every time getting the fonts from windows folder etc. (and of course if it is just a pkgbuild bump with no new fonts added it is a useless PITA²).

Spyhawk commented on 2013-08-09 07:31

Since this package provides ttf-ms-fonts, I guess adding "ttf-font" as a provided package would make sense too. This would allow to use only this set of fonts.

Nowaker commented on 2013-07-10 17:24

BTW, you should depend on xorg-mkfontscale and xorg-mkfontdir since you use it in .install.

Nowaker commented on 2013-07-10 17:14

You put this into the PKGBUILD comment. This violates the license as well. And is a PITA for us users.

$ cd ~/Downloads # (or any other working directory)
$ wget http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/A/F/0AFB5316-3062-494A-AB78-7FB0D4461357/windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe
$ cabextract -F *.tt[fc] -d win7_sp1 windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe
$ mkdir sp1-fonts
$ find win7_sp1 -name *.tt[fc] -exec cp '{}' ./sp1-fonts/ \;

I have forked this package to remove the PITA. ;-) If you decide to include the commented out code in your package, I will remove the package. Just let me know.

Would it be possible to include the fontconfig fix for Calibri from https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=136771 in this package?

jstjohn commented on 2013-06-22 18:46

That is a limitation in the AUR web interface.

There's a feature request that already exists for it here: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/12998

Anonymous comment on 2013-06-22 15:45

Yeah, I just meant the list of depencies shown on this web page. It only shows fontconfig, but not fontforge...

jstjohn commented on 2013-06-21 17:42

phrenchax, "fontforge" is already in the makedepends array...

Anonymous comment on 2013-06-21 17:16

Thanks for the package, this works well.
One comment: on a relativly fresh arch install, I was told I needed the "fontforge" package as a dependency during the makepkg step. This should perhaps be added to the list of dependencies...

mschmoelzer commented on 2013-06-20 06:48

I just did some research on this. Calibri Light was added by this update:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2761217/en-us

To me it looks as if this update is only downloadable from a Windows system - the download site asks you to run a "Genuine Windows Validation" tool, then enter the code produced by this tool.

This most likely means that Calibri Light is only available to people who have access to a running Windows installation.

You can however build this package without Calibri Light by removing the "calibril.ttf" and "calibrili.ttf" entries in the source array.

cfr42 commented on 2013-06-19 20:53

Hmmm. I don't actually have Windows installed. I have a licence for Windows 7 Home Premium so I downloaded an install image from digitalriver and extracted all of the fonts from the relevant version of Windows. I pulled everything not just the ones listed in your package. The installation image was for SP1 so I got the updated versions, I guess. However, I know very little about Windows. (I had to download the image because the first thing I did with my laptop was wipe Windows 7 from it and I didn't think about fonts.)

I do have arialblk and some other fonts not covered by your previous package but just not that weight of Calibri.

fr0z3d commented on 2013-06-19 13:25

Why isn't Segoe UI included?

mschmoelzer commented on 2013-06-19 06:19

Just to clarify once more: This package will NOT build automatically, so you can't use the various AUR helpers out there.

This is due to license issues (Microsoft doesn't allow the redistribution of their copyrighted fonts, so I can't host them online for makepkg's automatic source download function) - you will have to grab the files listed in the PKGBUILD source array from either a Windows 7 installation or install media, place them in the same folder as the PKGBUILD, then run makepkg manually.

mschmoelzer commented on 2013-06-19 06:14

mariusn: read the build instructions in the PKGBUILD file...

cfr42: not sure about that. I remember not having it either when I created this package, but now they are present in my installation. Is your Windows 7 installation fully up-to-date (including optional updates)?

Today's upgrade adds the 'Arial Black' (ariblk.ttf) and 'Symbol' (symbol.ttf) fonts as well as the "Light" and "Light Italic" styles of the Calibri font.

Also, checksums have been updated (pulled from a fully up-to-date Windows 7 installation).

Arial Black and Andale Mono are in ttf-ms-fonts and not in ttf-win7-fonts. Installing ttf-win7-fonts removes conflicting package ttf-ms-fonts which removes these fonts causing formerly working web pages to display incorrectly. Lucidia Sans Unicode, Lucida Console, Microsoft Sans Serif, Palatino Linotype, Symbol, and Tahoma are popular and should be in a win-fonts package. Tahoma in Win7 is newer than in package ttf-tahoma. Until the packages are fixed the fonts can be added and removed manually with this manual procedure applicable to any interactive build. Remaining Win7 fonts are international or found in the ms-office-2007-fonts package and can be added if desired.

Note: Arial Black in Windows 7 does not work in X. Use ariblk.ttf from ttf-ms-fonts.
Note: AbiWord does not render Symbol properly. Symbol works fine in other GTK apps.
Note: MS Gothic msgothic.ttc should be included but I couldn't get it to convert in Fontforge.
Note: Arial Narrow fonts from ttf-office-2007-fonts enumerate inside Arial improperly and cannot be selected due to incorrect Style information. Remove from ttf-office-2007-fonts and use Arial Narrow from Win7 which enumerates as a separate font. See Bodoni MT for an example of many font styles enumerating properly.
Note: In ttf-office-2007-fonts neither Segoe Chess SEGOECHESS.TTF nor Bookshelf Symbol 7 BSSYM7.TTF render properly. MS Outlook OUTLOOK.TTF has no purpose. These fonts should be removed.
Note: Calibri (4), Cambria (3), Candara (4), Consolas (4), Constantia (4), Corbel (4) are duplicated between ttf-win7-fonts and ttf-office-2007-fonts. I remove them from ttf-office-2007-fonts.
Note: Most GTK apps must be restarted to see newly installed fonts. Firefox immediately uses new fonts on page refresh.
Note to package managers: ttf-office-2007-fonts and ttf-win7-fonts should be listed as "optional" in each others PKGBUILD so the a message pops up on install recommending the other

#Use this procedure with ttf-ms-fonts, ttf-office-2007-fonts, ttf-google-webfonts, ttf-adobe-fonts, and other interactive build packages with the appropriate changes

The way Infinality renders fonts can be fine-tuned via the environment variables in /etc/profile.d/infinality-settings.sh

At the end of the file you can select various presets, you might want to try the "Windows" or "Sharpened" presets.

No, it's because you can't simply rename ttc to ttf. It's two different format. After converting the font, it works fine in Libreoffice.

Have you read the PKGBUILD?

I get:

ERROR: arial.ttf was not found in the build directory and is not a URL.

mschmoelzer commented on 2011-11-29 13:35

Updated for Windows 7 SP1 fonts, including Mangal and Gabriola fonts.

The updated PKGBUILD will rename fonts with .ttc extension to .ttf (currently only neccessary for the Cambria regular font)

However, I'm seeing another problem with Cambria: LibreOffice is always using the italic style of the Cambria font instead of the regular style. Other applications (e.g. Abiword) work fine.

Maybe this is a LibreOffice issue?

Great package. Libreoffice had some problems recognizing cambria.ttc, so I converted it to cambria.ttf before installing. No problems afterwards. Thanks!

Terrific package! Been looking for a PKGBUILD for these for ages. Thank you!

I just made a companion to this one providing all the Office 2007 fonts: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=52324

Yeah, so, sorry about that. I thought I'd be smart and just grab the install and PKGBUILD out of the archive. Years of windows use has trained me very well to ignore text files in archives, heh.

ripdog commented on 2011-08-31 06:04

Hi there, where exactly is this license.rtf supposed to come from? I didn't find one in my Win7 fonts dir.

mschmoelzer commented on 2011-07-16 21:56

This package provides newer versions of the fonts provided by the ttf-ms-fonts and ttf-vista-fonts packages. The newer versions have to be manually acquired by the user from a Windows 7 system or install media.

No automatic downloading of sources is possible due to licensing issues.
Be sure to read the build instructions in the PKGBUILD!
