I understand your rationale. I was hoping to help actually. I'm sure I won't be the last to trip on this problem. Now the info is somewhere for the next person seeing: aur-vivaldi/./PKGBUILD: line 45: strings: command not found

@BlackIkeEagle. According to: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AUR_helpers

"AUR helpers are not supported by Arch Linux. It is recommended to become familiar with the manual build process in order to be prepared to troubleshoot problems on one's own.

AUR helpers can replicate pacman(8) usage for the official repositories, such as pacman -Syu. This usage may deviate from pacman in various ways; it is thus not supported or recommended. "

Anyway, you can ask for help as you did. But for these reasons that dependency should not be added.

Greetings.

@BlackIkeEagle Arf. Thanks for your details. I should have told you I did not use makepkg directly but yaourt. As far as I can tell, the full base-devel is not needed. It is not installed on this fresh system and all I had to do is install binutils to get strings(1). Vivaldi works fine.

@ArnaudM to use makepkg you are supposed to have base-devel installed, if binutils is not in that group on manjaro you can open a bugreport there.

pacman -Sg base-devel
base-devel gawk
base-devel systemd
base-devel autoconf
base-devel automake
base-devel binutils
base-devel bison
base-devel fakeroot
base-devel file
base-devel findutils
base-devel flex
base-devel gawk
base-devel gcc
base-devel gettext
base-devel grep
base-devel groff
base-devel gzip
base-devel libtool
base-devel m4
base-devel make
base-devel pacman
base-devel patch
base-devel pkg-config
base-devel sed
base-devel sudo
base-devel systemd
base-devel texinfo
base-devel util-linux
base-devel which

It would be helpful to add a dependency on binutils (for strings(1)) as it is not present on minimal distributions (such as Manjaro Architect setups)

@BoneTone probably a broken download; try deleting vivaldi-stable-1.13.1008.40-1.x86_64.rpm file.

I have not been able to install the latest build tried several times over the past week or so and always get...

==> Validating source_x86_64 files with sha512sums... vivaldi-stable-1.13.1008.40-1.x86_64.rpm ... FAILED

Also have issue with the not matching sum. As far I see, it checks with the wrong, old version (vivaldi-1.13.1008.40-1).

Creating package: vivaldi 1.13.1008.40-2 Downloading from source... -> Downloading vivaldi-stable-1.13.1008.40-1.x86_64.rpm

Weirdly, when I removed the already downloaded rpm from pacaur cache files and vivaldi was downloaded again, it passed the test and installed itself correctly. Now I'm unsure which version I actually have, because vivaldi's info page doesn't show that much version number detail. Either way, next version will override it anyway so there should be no bigger problem.

Can confirm checksum has failed a few times for me, but worked once - I have a feeling the website serving it up may have some issues at the moment which is causing corruption along the way

I just tried out of curiosity, and unexpectedly the same happened to me! :-o

==> Validating source_x86_64 files with sha512sums... vivaldi-stable-1.13.1008.40-1.x86_64.rpm ... FAILED ==> ERROR: One or more files did not pass the validity check!

I can confirm back on December 23, the package built seamlessly in my PC.
