I've found that it possible to compile against lua5.3 and I've uploaded a lua5.3 compatible PKGBUILD here

There are several steps to getting this working:

1) Add the patch to source(): (this is from the standard vlc arch package)

2) Apply the patch in build(): patch -Np1 -i "${srcdir}/vlc"
n.b. the patch gets saved as "vlc" i'm not sure sure source() lets you rename

3) Add the following to the ./configure line:
LUAC=/usr/bin/luac LUA_LIBS="`pkg-config --libs lua`"

Is there any way to make this build with lua? lua5.2 or 5.1 is required for the RC or HTTP interfaces (vlc -I rc) as the current version of lua is 5.3 it compiles without it.

This can be remedied by:

sudo pacman -S lua51 && sudo ln -s /usr/lib/pkgconfig/lua51.pc /usr/lib/pkgconfig/lua5.1.pc
sudo mv /usr/bin/luac /usr/bin/luac5.3
sudo mv /usr/bin/luac5.1 /usr/bin/luac
yaourt -S vlc-nightly
// now move back the original files
sudo mv /usr/bin/luac /usr/bin/luac5.1
sudo mv /usr/bin/luac5.3 /usr/bin/luac

this is a horrible workaround, is there any way to build this into the pkgbuild?

I understand this is pulled from the nightly sources but how often is the package updated because its not pulling in the most recent IE nightly build when i try to install, its still using 0913..

Thanks for letting me know about that problem. It wasn't occurring on my 64-bit machine. I've modified the PKGBUILD to use "-fPIC" from now on.
