It would be cool to add as a dependency and patch the FlashTool* scripts to look for /usr/lib/udev/rules.d instead of /etc/udev/rules.d. That way, we won't have to run this as root.

You are installing a prebuild binary, and not building from source. So, consider adding -bin to the $pkgname, or build from source.

Also, consider striping the ELF files.
