Thank you for the suggestion! I haven't tried that because of a comment JWZ added to the top of hacks/xmatrix.c which reads:

 *         NOTE:
 *
 * People just love to hack on this one. I get sent
 * patches to this all the time saying, ``here, I made
 * it better!'' Mostly this hasn't been true.
 *
 * If you've made changes to xmatrix, when you send me
 * your patch, please explain, in English, both *what*
 * your changes are, and *why* you think those changes
 * make this screensaver behave more like the displays
 * in the movie did. I'd rather not have to read your
 * diffs to try and figure that out for myself...
 *
 * In particular, note that the characters in the movie
 * were, in fact, low resolution and somewhat blurry/
 * washed out. They also definitely scrolled a
 * character at a time, not a pixel at a time.

Of course I fall on the other side of the fence; I know what the movie looked like but I still want cyan matrix text, darn it! I figured deviation from the green text would be an automatic disqualification upstream.

ctag, glad you like it! Have you thought about submitting these patches to JWZ? https://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/bugs.html He has others credited for a number of screensavers, and he seems to be in favor of lots of screensaver configurability already.

NoobAlice, my hero! Thank you for flagging, and also the feed link!

NoobAlice commented on 2021-10-19 01:33 (UTC)

Maybe a new feature on the website, but JWZ has a feed!

Flagging out-of-date now so you see the new version 6.02 available and this feed :)

Thank you to the user who flagged 5.42 out of date. JWZ (upstream) complains a lot about package maintainers not packaging the new stuff... And then (afaik) doesn't provide any way to subscribe to updates (rss, email..). So I don't know something's wrong until someone tells me.

5.44 is out now, and required re-writing the entire xmatrix-color thing. Please let me know if it no longer works for you.

OK, I made a quick hack to get the color shifting working on 5.39. It's not good and will probably need a second pass, but should hopefully compile as-is for you.

Thanks for marking as out-of-date. I have yet to find a mailing list or anything from jwz, so updates largely pass me by.

The latest version of upstream xmatrix replaces the old xpm/xbm files with png ones, which breaks all of my changes. I'm going to see if it's possible to tweak things to work, but right now it looks to be over my head.

Thanks Barikad. I'll bring this package forward to 5.34 as soon as I get a chance. *29-10-2015: Done. We're now compiling with xscreensaver-5.34.
