For me 'ipp://<ip_address>/ipp/port1' did not work, I still got only the DCP-L3550CDW drivers shown, which refuses to print anything. I took only 'ipp://BRWA8934A9407AD/' (hostname of the printer) and then I could choose the "IPP Everywhere TM". This driver supports duplex and single printing, color and grayscale, works with A4 format, so apparently all is working now. Took me 2 hours and 50 sides of test printing. I just bought the dcpl3550cdw because of rumours brother has a good Linux support. They don´t.

Note: If you are using "IPP Everywhere" driver, you don't need this package to be installed. When the printer brand needs to be selected (just before selecting the driver), just select "Generic", then for the driver select "IPP Everywhere TM"

Thanks a lot @stewi! I got colors working by using CUPS to add a printer via IPP, with the URL you recommended. Interestingly, the correct driver only shows up when adding the printer with CUPS, not when doing so with system-config-printer.

I've written up this solution on printerforums.net and raised an issue for system-config-printer.

@mb720 I had a very similar problem.

Solved by manually entering 'ipp://<ip_address>/ipp/port1'. A different driver with a longer name then appeared "DCP-L3550CDW series - IPP Everywhere - IPP Everywhere ™" as opposed to "Brother DCP-L3550CDW CUPS (en)" that had always appeared. After selecting the new driver, it worked no problems.

Auto detection (and me for 5 hours) seems to find the wrong URI endpoint.

Thanks a lot for packaging this driver!

Is anyone else having trouble printing? I'm able to to print the "Self-Test Page" using system-config-printer. This prints a black border on the page along with "Brother DCP-L3550CDW series 3010.106 5 -888078254" on three separate lines.

But when I select "Print Test Page" (the one that includes Tux next to a stylized printer), the printer state goes from "Processing" directly to "Idle" and the printer doesn't do anything. There are no errors for any jobs in the CUPS web interface.

Using a different driver "Generic PCL Laser Printer [en]" allows printing the test page in black and white but not in color.

Do you know how to debug this further?

driver is now installed into /opt as some bin paths are hardcoded, with the new paths margins are now working for me on test printing

I also had issues with margins using this driver. The document would print too high and slightly to the left. Using the driver option «Brother DCP-L3550CDW series, driverless, cups-filters 1.23.0» in the CUPS web UI when adding the printer resolved this issue.

Unfortunately, when I print, it appears the margins are wrong, or the text is printed way too much to the top of the paper. This happens when printing a PDF. When printing a test page, all alignment looks proper. Does anybody have the same issue?
