The upstream project is currently unmaintained, see its README.md, but not abandonned for once (repo isn't archived, also see this comment on the issue tracker).

This package is currently not usable but in a kind of hibernation until a final decision about the upstream future is made.

Maybe you should add lxqt-build-tools in the list of the dependencies, because I had this error: CMake Error at /usr/share/cmake-3.7/Modules/CMakeFindDependencyMacro.cmake:55 (find_package): By not providing "Findlxqt-build-tools.cmake" in CMAKE_MODULE_PATH this project has asked CMake to find a package configuration file provided by "lxqt-build-tools", but CMake did not find one. Could not find a package configuration file provided by "lxqt-build-tools" (requested version 0.3.1) with any of the following names: lxqt-build-toolsConfig.cmake lxqt-build-tools-config.cmake Add the installation prefix of "lxqt-build-tools" to CMAKE_PREFIX_PATH or set "lxqt-build-tools_DIR" to a directory containing one of the above files. @klundry https://github.com/surlykke/lxqt-connman-applet/issues/12 @ozky Couldn't reproduce your findings using numerous different WLAN adapters so far. Maybe some dependency issue at your side. Anyway the problem does not look like a downstream packaging issue so this comment section is probably not the right place to discuss it.

Have you had any chance to look into why the system tray icon displays a generic blank icon? I am still having the issue.
