+1 for splitting this up and leaving out the python2 make-dependency. This is a lot of unnecessary overhead, especially since the python2 package got dropped from the official repository and the AUR package only builds successfully in a chroot environment or with --nocheck.

Is it necessary to enforce the python2.x version to be built? Most/All modern systems are using recent 3.x python, and installing python 2 just to build a lib for a version that is not used anymore (by most) seems like a lot of overhead. I'd suggest splitting it up, in case you see people actually still using the legacy version.
