There are zero negative consequences of keeping autoconf as a dependency.

According to the package datatbase, python-pyxdg provides python-xdg, so it's just a formal thing.

hello @ph34rb0t autoconf included in base-devel 1 group witch according to arch wiki 2 should be installed by all users who want to use AUR. so I think @stormdragon2976 should remove it again.

regarding python-pyxdg, I will investigate this.

python-xdg is in the AUR. It was the dependency we used for a long time, will python-pyxdg work the same way, and should it replace the python-xdg dependency?

Just a note: Cmcaine's fork is the only Speech Dispatcher release that works with the svox-pico-bin package for me, using "pico" as the DefaultModule.
