  • I haven't asked for separate pkgbuilds (current pkgbuild is alreasy splitted)
  • on the AUR there is only appmenu-qt4 (I've never used them)
  • gobject-introspection is needed as makedepends (for making budgie), I have tried in clean chroot using devtools, never builded without

rilian commented on 2022-04-19 17:12 (UTC)

  1. Maybe someday I will make splitting of package, but not now.
  2. How appmenu-qt and appmenu-qt5 is called now?
  3. gobject-introspection is needed for budgie or not? I can build without it sometimes.

FabioLolix commented on 2022-04-19 17:08 (UTC)

@ryuukk you're interpreting it wrong, the pkgbuild is already splitted (instead you're asking to make separate pkgbuilds) in an elegant way and with the possibility to disable not needed stuff.

The common part and the DE specific are better to be build at the same time, what you're asking for is more work for the pkgbuild maintainer.

your options are either:

  • edit the pkgbuild
  • build in chroot with devtools

ryuukk commented on 2022-04-19 14:07 (UTC)

i shouldn't have to do that, if i install: vala-panel-appmenu-xfce-git

then it shouldn't try to install gnome or budgie

please split the packages, so it behaves correctly

i read your comment as:

"pacman -S chrome"

"edit PKGCONFIG so it doesn't install firefox by default"

FabioLolix commented on 2022-04-10 15:21 (UTC)

@ryuukk it is split package, at the top of the pkgbuilds replaces '0' with '1' for the stuff you don't need, i.e. _disable_budgie=1

ryuukk commented on 2022-04-10 14:05 (UTC)

why is this bloated? why do i need to install budgie and gnome session?

i swear, arch is starting to follow windows bloat driven development

rilian commented on 2022-04-08 08:19 (UTC)

zone, please, remove old versions of built packages, clean build latest version.

zone commented on 2022-04-08 07:20 (UTC) (edited on 2022-04-08 07:21 (UTC) by zone)

Build with error:

vala-panel-appmenu-xfce-git/src/build/meson-private/coredata.dat' references functions or classes that don't exist. This probably means that it was generated with an old version of meson.

FabioLolix commented on 2022-01-10 18:42 (UTC)

It has been created this year on the AUR, also is good practice to do it anyway so the package are 'future proof'. All variations of a pkgbase (which could also not exists) should provide/conflicts the pkgbase

rilian commented on 2022-01-10 18:39 (UTC)

But is there such packages in stable?

FabioLolix commented on 2022-01-10 18:36 (UTC)

All the packages need to provide/conflicts with the relative stable package

FabioLolix commented on 2022-01-10 18:26 (UTC)

@NovaViper at the top of the pkgbuilds replaces '0' with '1' for the stuff you don't need, i.e. _disable_budgie=1

NovaViper commented on 2021-10-11 12:46 (UTC)

How do you remove all of the extra dependencies??? I don't want the package to install every other DE on my system, and there seems to be no way to remove them without causing the pkgbuild to just stop working completely.

Tio commented on 2021-09-17 16:45 (UTC)

I was curious if this is needed since this is for XFCE

rilian commented on 2021-09-17 16:41 (UTC)

Just edit PKGBUILD and commit out budgie, if you do not want to build it.

Tio commented on 2021-09-17 16:33 (UTC)

So you have to build the entire budgie-desktop for this?

rilian commented on 2021-09-10 09:15 (UTC)

  1. It is me who wrote GitLab readme) And it is possible now to build even without libbamf (but it is untested)
  2. Due to nature of PKGBUILD (it builds all applets in one PKGBUILD) I cannot remove DE dependencies.

spacecowgirl commented on 2021-09-10 08:02 (UTC) (edited on 2021-09-10 08:07 (UTC) by spacecowgirl)

As per the main github page (just checked) the dependencies should only be GLib (>= 2.50.0), GTK+ (>= 3.22.0), valac (>= 0.24.0), libbamf (>=0.5.0). Please remove the irrelevant desktop environment dependencies as the README specifically outlines that it is possible to build only the relevant app menu for your desired desktop environment. My low-spec laptop does not have the space for additional desktop environments. Please review the meson flags. Thank you!

sistematico commented on 2021-07-02 20:28 (UTC)

Please add cmake,gobject-introspection as makedepends.

Edu4rdSHL commented on 2021-03-08 23:00 (UTC) (edited on 2021-03-08 23:10 (UTC) by Edu4rdSHL)

Hey, rillian, thank you for maintaining this package. Can you add gobject-introspectionto makedepends? The package is failing to build due to this missing dep.

rilian commented on 2021-02-24 09:33 (UTC)

AnySomebody - package? You should install budgie-desktop for this.

AnySomebody commented on 2021-02-24 09:31 (UTC) (edited on 2021-02-24 09:35 (UTC) by AnySomebody)

Getting: Run-time dependency budgie-1.0 found: NO (tried pkgconfig and cmake)

vala-panel-appmenu/ ERROR: Dependency "budgie-1.0" not found, tried pkgconfig and cmake

Edit: Adding gobject-introspection fixed it for me as well, I guess it should be added to the dependencies.

rilian commented on 2020-09-21 14:46 (UTC)

Because it is build dependency and you should build a package for ALL DEs at once (not just for XFCE).

NovaViper commented on 2020-09-21 14:17 (UTC)

Why is bungie a dependency when the package is meant for XFCE? I keep getting dependency for the bungie package when Im using XFCE

jextrevor commented on 2020-09-08 18:04 (UTC) (edited on 2020-09-08 18:06 (UTC) by jextrevor)

Interesting, so I'm looking at the page for budgie, and gobject-introspection is listed as a make dependency. Perhaps we need to just add it here as a make dependency as well... because this isn't building budgie, it's just using it as a dependency. Not sure

rilian commented on 2020-09-08 17:54 (UTC)

In budgie, I think.

jextrevor commented on 2020-09-08 17:18 (UTC)

Doing yay -S gobject-introspection and then installing again fixed it for me as well. I'm not sure about the missing dependency... is that something that's truly missing here/in vala-panel-appmenu-common-git or is it missing in budgie-desktop?

andreymal commented on 2020-09-08 16:54 (UTC) (edited on 2020-09-08 16:58 (UTC) by andreymal)

Got it:

$ pkg-config --print-errors budgie-1.0
Package gobject-introspection-1.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `gobject-introspection-1.0.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
Package 'gobject-introspection-1.0', required by 'libpeas-1.0', not found

It seems there is a missing dependency. This fixed it for me:

sudo pacman -S gobject-introspection

Maybe this is missing libpeas dependency, dunno

andreymal commented on 2020-09-08 16:48 (UTC)

I have the same problem with budgie-1.0. The previous version was successfully built a few days ago

rilian commented on 2020-09-08 16:27 (UTC)

jextrevor, then it is strange, it should builds. Meson does not do anything fancy, it just looks into that file.

jextrevor commented on 2020-09-08 16:12 (UTC)

Yes, that file is present

rilian commented on 2020-09-08 15:58 (UTC)

You should have file /usr/lib/pkgconfig/budgie-1.0.pc in your system.

rilian commented on 2020-09-08 15:57 (UTC)

You need to find all files with names containing 'budgie-1.0'.

jextrevor commented on 2020-09-08 15:45 (UTC)

Not sure what you're asking me to do. I don't have the commands updatedb or locate on my system. Do you know what package they're a part of?

rilian commented on 2020-09-08 15:41 (UTC)

jextrevor, please run updatedb && locate budgie-1.0

jextrevor commented on 2020-09-08 15:30 (UTC) (edited on 2020-09-08 15:38 (UTC) by jextrevor) (the command I ran was yay -S vala-panel-appmenu-xfce-git

rilian commented on 2020-09-08 15:15 (UTC)

jextervor, please, post full build log to pastebin)

jextrevor commented on 2020-09-08 14:31 (UTC)

I didn't modify the PKGBUILD, just installed it plainly with yay -Sy vala-panel-appmenu-xfce-git

rilian commented on 2020-09-08 14:28 (UTC)

jextervor, will look for it in evening.

rilian commented on 2020-09-08 14:27 (UTC)

jextrevor, it was always as make dependency, because you builds ALL applets from this PKGBUILD. Maybe you was modified a PKGBUILD to remove budgie?

jextrevor commented on 2020-09-08 14:26 (UTC)

Interestingly enough, I already had budgie-desktop installed. I reinstalled it just for good measure, but the build still fails.

jextrevor commented on 2020-09-08 14:24 (UTC)

Yeah, even when I uninstall xfce-git, and then try to update (or reinstall) common-git, it tries to build xfce-git first. I will just install budgie-desktop for now and then remove it to try to get the build to work.

jextrevor commented on 2020-09-08 14:22 (UTC)

rilian, I don't have that installed, was it recently added as a make dependency? Either way, when I try to install vala-panel-appmenu-common-git first, yay decides to install vala-panel-appmenu-xfce-git first anyway. The build fails at that step. I will try uninstalling vala-panel-appmenu-xfce-git, updating common-git, and reinstalling xfce-git.

rilian commented on 2020-09-08 08:44 (UTC) (edited on 2020-09-08 08:44 (UTC) by rilian)

jextrevor , I updated PKGBUILD to meson already. You have budgie-desktop installed? It is a makedependency.

jextrevor commented on 2020-09-07 23:18 (UTC)

When trying to update to the latest version (either this package or vala-panel-appmenu-common-git), I get an error:

rilian commented on 2020-04-05 17:00 (UTC)

Should be fixed now.

jextrevor commented on 2020-04-04 03:02 (UTC)

Same as @vegas, but I'm getting Can not find package name : [==> Mate applet enabled]

vegas commented on 2020-04-01 20:22 (UTC)

I can not install the package on Arch + XFCE. Yay writes: Can not find package name : [==> Xfce applet enabled] :(

settyness commented on 2020-01-08 08:04 (UTC)

Well, I'll be damned. I went ahead and cut all of the msg lines and it built successfully. Thanks for your response, I believe you somehow found the culprit.

torma commented on 2020-01-07 11:35 (UTC)

I'm not sure exactly why it's breaking, but I managed to get the PKGBUILD to work by removing the "msg" lines (for the DE you're installing for, and for the general "if you'd like to disable...").

settyness commented on 2020-01-07 02:13 (UTC)

Is there any chance we can get this to build for Xfce again? Is there anything you need from me to help?

rilian commented on 2020-01-02 08:30 (UTC)

Yes, full build log

bjo commented on 2020-01-02 08:00 (UTC)

rilian commented on 2019-12-31 01:04 (UTC)

Will look for it

settyness commented on 2019-12-30 21:22 (UTC)

Yeah, I haven't been able to get this to build for months. I disable all but Xfce modules and the package dies at the same point every time: Can not find package name : [==> Xfce applet enabled]. Not really sure what it's attempting to do here.

rilian commented on 2019-12-11 07:02 (UTC)

@bjo, full log, please

Your PKGBUILD seems broken, it says it builds the package for budgie, but it's empty:

vala-panel-appmenu-budgie-git /usr/
vala-panel-appmenu-budgie-git /usr/lib/

dustinwilson commented on 2019-09-08 15:29 (UTC)

This package is building the budgie, mate, and vala appmenus along with the xfce one. Is this intended?

rilian commented on 2019-08-08 08:15 (UTC)

rilian commented on 2019-07-15 08:37 (UTC) (edited on 2019-07-15 08:37 (UTC) by rilian)

@coltondrg, we should write bugreport to Arch repos, because it is strange (libpeas does not depend on g-i, but should). Okay, I will add it to Budgie variant, when I buy writing desk and chair for it)))

commented on 2019-07-14 20:49 (UTC)

gobject-introspection should be added as a builddep, else the build will fail to find libpeas, the build will succeed, and the applet will not show up in Budgie

No, vala-panel-git is a panel, not a plugin) but vala-panel-appmenu-valapanel-git is appmenu plugin for that panel. It is different project with different version number.

Karmak23 commented on 2018-09-15 03:06 (UTC) (edited on 2018-09-15 03:07 (UTC) by Karmak23)

Shouldn't vala-panel be provided by vala-panel-appmenu-valapanel-git instead of vala-panel-git ?

It seems the first has the same version number as vala-panel-appmenu-xfce-git, whereas vala-panel-git is outdated.

rilian commented on 2018-08-18 21:39 (UTC)

vala-panel-git should provide vala-panel. I will look into this package.

commented on 2018-04-30 16:33 (UTC)

appmenu-qt is a missing optional dependency, now it's appmenu-qt4. Also appmenu-qt5 is not needed anymore if vala-panel-appmenu-registrar is installed since qt5 exports the menu bar to DBus by itself.

Vanilla GTK2 hides the menus natively, so gtk2-ubuntu isn't needed as well. However, appmenu-gtk-module-git doesn't work on flatpak'ed gtk2 apps. In flatpak'ed gtk3 apps the menu bar doesn't hide.

Just some feedback so the PKGBUILD dep list is fixed.

zhangkaizhao commented on 2018-04-24 02:22 (UTC)

@rilian gobject-introspection is needed as one of the makedepends here.

rilian commented on 2018-04-08 20:58 (UTC)

No, it should not, because you can use different Registrar provider like kwin.

dwellingsoul commented on 2018-04-08 19:23 (UTC)

I installed this and had duplicated menus (panel + menubar in applications). Enabling ShellShowsAppMenu and ShellShowsMenuBar with xfconf didn't work.

I fixed it by installing vala-panel-appmenu-registrar-git. IMO it should be a dependency so that users won't have to be looking for fixes.

rilian commented on 2018-03-11 18:03 (UTC)

Can you write this to issues with a full log? And you should not set Java agent before building finished, or it will be broken.

andreyorst commented on 2018-03-11 15:50 (UTC)

Understood. But can't quite get how to build it with Jayatana. I've installed OpenJDK7, and tryed to build your Git package according to your instructions from readme, and got this error: And I'm not quite sure what I've done wrong.

rilian commented on 2018-03-10 20:01 (UTC) (edited on 2018-03-10 20:05 (UTC) by rilian)

It is make dependencies, you can just build appmenu-gtk-module, and then remove rest of panels. All panels needed just because I do not want to build applet four times (it will builds four times, if I split pkgbase to seven packages). For KDE you will need only appmenu-gtk-module and jayatana (Jayatana is disabled, because I do not want openjdk in make dependencies).

Why are you needed to install all panels to make this: just because it builds one time to rule them all: it build GTK-only dependent static library (it will not be installed) and then actual plugins for all panels (XFCE, MATE, vala-panel and budgie-panel). If I split a package, it will build static library and Registrar four times, which I do not want, because I have vala-panel, MATE and budgie).

andreyorst commented on 2018-03-10 19:21 (UTC)

Whoa.. I've just read a post in Kai Uwe's Blog, about GTK global menus in plasma 5.13, and was curious to install this package just in case so I don't forget about it when 5.13 is released. And.. Do I really need xfce4-panel, vala-panel-git, budgie-desktop (OMG why you even need a desktop as dependency?) and all the rest of 63 dependencies just to have appmenu-gtk-module-git in my plasma setup?.. Or I can install it with -Sdd? I don't want unused packages in my system, espeshially if it is anothed DE packages which I wont use anyway.

Why pull all kind of panels with appmenu package? I think it makes no sence in any DE, not only in KDE Plasma. Is there a some kind of mistake?

rilian, problem on fresh installed Arch (base, base-devel, xfce4 etc...), on Manjaro build successful. Maybe need some hidden dependencies which are not in pkgbuild??

It is a git package, you should not mark it as out of date, if it builds

I does not use it with Unity. But it must show a global menu, if menu uses MenuModel protocol. And I suggests appmenu-gtk-module.

ryukinix commented on 2017-07-25 05:49 (UTC)

My on Unity only works without freeze with this. But using this package leaves me to the main menu bar from Unity is hidden and this is very bad. This is expected? Any way to toogle it back? I can execute `GTK_MODULES='' unity-editor` but the editor freezes...

qark commented on 2017-07-21 18:01 (UTC) (edited on 2017-07-21 18:31 (UTC) by qark)

@rilian That's not very convenient. Could you split this package? Concerning "appmenu-qt (optional) – for qt4 menus". There is appmenu-qt4 package in Community ( Can I use it as appmenu-qt? If so could you fix this dependency? "_disable_unity_gtk_module=o". It should be =0, shouldn't it?

rilian commented on 2017-07-21 11:30 (UTC)

Yes, if you do not want to install all applets.

qark commented on 2017-07-21 11:28 (UTC)

@gborzi Do I have to do it every time when package updates?

gborzi commented on 2017-07-15 11:36 (UTC)

@qark just put _disable_mate=1 _disable_xfce=0 _disable_vala=1 _disable_budgie=1 _disable_unity_gtk_module=o at the start of PKGBUILD.

qark commented on 2017-07-15 10:39 (UTC)

Why does it depend on budgie-desktop and mate-panel? Is there way maybe via compiling flags to disable these dependencies?

Google Chrome works also. No MATE app works. Caja, Terminal etc, they still have their menus and the GlobalMenu applet only gets the name of the apps with no other menu. I don't know how to proceed at this point.

Today, when updating the system update, it is suggested to replace mate-panel-gtk3 with mate-panel. I deleted the vala-panel-appmenu-mate-git package. I upgraded the system, then loaded the snapshot and replaced the mate-panel-gtk3 lines with the mate-panel in the PKGBUILD and .SRCINFO files. Then I compiled and installed the vala-panel-appmenu-mate-git package.

After installing this and finding it didn't really work for my computer I uninstalled it with "yaourt -R". Can you shed some light on how I can get rid of this error since it obviously can't find the module since it's not installed any more. Thanks.

It does not require java-swing-globalmenu for work: it is just an applet for XFCE panel using Unity stack. But I do not own Unity packages itself (like appmenu-gtk2 or java-swing-globalmenu) I does not have java-swing-globalmenu on any of my machines. About appmenu-gtk2: try installing appmenu-gtk.

It says, when installing java-swing-globalmenu, that the appmenu-gtk2 can't be found
