GitHub dropped support for the git:// protocol a year ago. Rectify that and prepend git+ so that makepkg knows to check it out into a directory.

Alternatively, let me take control of the repository to push such fixes myself.

Please can you update the PKGBUILD so that the format used for the pkgver variable matches the same format as calculated by the pkgver() function. Currently it's believing that there is a new update waiting when there isn't, every time a utility checks.

showing v. r96.9845c22-1 as installed, wants to install update to 5c5d1118dcb99fb53f9c69b46794877b25d80d28-1 which runs without error but does not register the update, which still shows the version as r96.9845c22-1 after reinstalling, with call to upgrade
