I am now successfully running the Archlinux blackbox package having built and installed the bbkeys-0.9.1.tar.gz available from Sourceforge https://sourceforge.net/projects/bbkeys/files/

After building, installing, rebooting and running AUR blackbox-git, building and installing and running as root bbkeys-git-0.9.2.r0.g6a28d46-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst dumps core:

/usr/include/c++/13.1.1/bits/basic_string.h:1259: std::__cxx11::basic_string<_CharT, _Traits, _Alloc>::reference std::__cxx11::basic_string<_CharT, _Traits, _Alloc>::operator[](size_type) [with _CharT = char; _Traits = std::char_traits<char>; _Alloc = std::allocator<char>; reference = char&; size_type = long unsigned int]: Assertion '__pos <= size()' failed.
Aborted (core dumped)

And when running as a user:

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::logic_error'
  what(): basic_string: construction from null is not valid
Aborted (core dumped)
